Madison Mayor calls for Edgewater appeal
Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz on Tuesday called for Brookfield-based Hammes Co. to appeal the Landmarks Commission’s rejection of the Edgewater Hotel development.
The commission on Monday voted against granting the project a certificate of appropriateness and a variance for construction on the grounds that the size of the project did not fit in with its surrounding historic district.
Cieslewicz called that decision entirely subjective, and although he said he did not blame the commission for sticking to “hazy prescriptions” of the city’s landmarks ordinance, he said a handful of unelected people on one city committee should not have the power to stop the project.
