Wis. mining committee schedules first meeting

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A special Wisconsin state Senate committee created to study whether the law ought to be changed to allow for a new iron ore mine to open is meeting for the first time.

The mining committee announced Wednesday that it would hold an informational hearing Tuesday in the state Capitol.

The meeting comes after the Legislature ended its fall session last week without debating any bill that would help make it easier for a Florida-based mining company to open a massive iron mine in northern Wisconsin.

Only invited speakers will be allowed at the hearing focusing on the regulatory and procedural components related to metallic mining in Wisconsin.

Speakers include staff from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Dr. Tom Evans with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
