Jeff Bierman of C.G. Schmidt Inc., Milwaukee, installs a door handle on the fourth floor of the Fix Office Building in Milwaukee on March 13. Schmidt is the general contractor on the 30,425-square-foot project which is modeled on the Living Building Challenge, an ideology that aims to achieve the highest levels of sustainability possible from the building. The third floor of the building was turned over for occupancy on March 19. The wood in the stairwell is an example of the building’s sustainability; the planks are recovered from local trees that were cut down after being infected by the emerald ash borer.
