  • Blah, blah, blah. Why didn’t Alderman Bob Donovan ever call for public votes on the really-insanely-expensive public-works projects, such as the Marquette Interchange (that was built to fail again in a few decades), all the unasked-for Interstate projects, and the still-quietly-brewing Lake Freeway proposal that almost caused World War III back in 1994? http://www.smartgrowthamerica.org/weyrich3.pdf

Donovan just likes reasons to call press conferences. And if he did his homework, he’d realize that the money isn’t able to simply be shifted to a “local roadwork project.”

I liken the current street car debate to the Riverwalk. When it gets built, years later we will be happy it’s in place.

That’s quite a leap, to assume in the headline that Donovan is urging the mayor ‘to scrap’ the streetcar project. While that may be the case, we don’t know that, and that’s not what he’s asking for. What we do know, is that he is asking for the public to have some input into that which they will be paying a hefty sum for. Does the mayor actually think that the shortfall of ‘government money’ which is both a certainty, and a large pile of money, he says he will pass on to private phone, cable, and utility companies will not be passed along to the consumers? What is so wrong with at least having the debate of need vs. want, and put it to a vote. Seems to me, many of the same people who for the last year and a half that have been lecturing us on ‘what democracy looks like’ don’t actually recognize it when it’s staring them in the face, and certainly don’t want it to occurr for this project. For, yes, even “Government money” comes from…where? (hint…it’s NOT Obamas ‘stash’)
I don’t know when it became such an outrage, for the taxpayer to have a little say what his money is spent for…hmmm, almost sounds like what democracy looks like.
By the way…with Wisconsin winters, and the tons of road salt used, how far beyond 30 years do you think a road project should be designed for?
