MENOMONIE, Wis. (AP) — Dunn County is extending a moratorium on silica sand mining.

The county board voted to continue the six-month moratorium at its Wednesday night meeting in Menomonie.

Cheryl Merrill of Menomonie was one citizen who urged the board not to jump on the sand mining boom until regulations are adopted to protect land, water and air. Yet others, including Dale Geissler said existing state and federal regulations will address sand mining environmental concerns. Geissler said sand mining could bring a lot of work to the county.

The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says the six-month moratorium adopted earlier was to end on Tuesday.
