Report: LEED reaches 2 billion square feet of commercial space

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design now has more than 2 billion square feet of certified commercial buildings throughout the world, according to a report by DesignBuild Source.

An additional seven billion square feet of certified LEED buildings also will be built, according to DesignBuild.

There are 50,000 commercial projects and 23,000 homes in 130 countries that have been certified, and according to DesignBuild, another 86,000 projects have been registered for certification.

The U.S. Green Building Council certifies an average of 2 million square-feet of commercial building space each day, according to the report.

New projects, as well as buildings undergoing renovation, can be LEED certified, such as the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s 100-year-old education building, according to DesignBuild.

LEED projects, according to the report, have supported 7.9 million new jobs throughout the U.S.
