Point Beach Nuclear Plant not shutting down

TWO RIVERS, Wis. (AP) — The Point Beach Nuclear Plant in Two Rivers will not be affected by the closing of the Kewaunee Power Station.

Owner Dominion Resources announced Monday it will shut down the one-reactor nuclear facility in Kewaunee in spring 2013. It cited as reasons the low cost of producing electricity and soon-to-expire agreements for selling the plant’s output.

Point Beach is owned by NextEra Energy Resources of Florida and has two reactors.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports Kewaunee’s agreements to sell electricity expire in December 2013 and Point Beach has long-term contracts that expire in 2030 for Unit 1 and 2033 for Unit 2.

Point Beach produces 1,200 megawatts of electricity, more than twice that of Kewaunee, with nearly the same number of employees.
