The company that wants to demolish a portion of the Hide House in Milwaukee to make room for an affordable-housing development is appealing the decision to give the building historic protection.

The Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission last month gave the Hide House temporary historic designation that prevents demolition of any portion of the building for at least two months.

Hide House 2007 LLC, Milwaukee, appealed the decision to the city’s Common Council. The company plans to demolish the northern portion of the structure and build the Hide House Lofts, which will include 60 apartments for low-income residents and 50 underground parking spaces.

The developer’s appeal argues that aldermen Robert Bauman, who is a member of the Historic Preservation Commission, and Tony Zielinski, who filed the petition to protect the building, should not vote on the subject.

The company asked the entire 15-member Common Council to consider the appeal, rather than just the five-member Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee, of which Bauman and Zielinski are members.
