State lawmakers from the La Crosse area are trying to exempt a parcel of land along the Mississippi River from property taxes to spur development of a theater.
The La Crosse Community Theatre is in its 46th season at the existing Main Street location, which Executive Director Jackie Jensen-Utz called “inadequate.”
La Crosse developer Don Weber offered to donate a parcel of land next to his Riverside Center development downtown, but even with the gift of land, Jensen-Utz said the property taxes on the land would make any project financially unviable.
If the bill passes, she said, the group would immediately start a campaign for a new building, but she gave no specifics on the project’s cost, size or timeline.
