Lawmakers sound off on Zoo Interchange

State Sen. Ted Kanavas, R-Brookfield, and state Sen. Jim Sullivan, D-Wauwatosa, on Friday issued statements in response to the emergency action needed to repair the Zoo Interchange.

“I’ve been calling for the reconstruction of the Zoo Interchange since 2005 and now the bridges are falling down,” Kanavas said in a press release. “Over that time, the governor and legislative Democrats raided the transportation fund to the tune of $1.2 billion and chose to ignore what was happening to the busiest interchange in the state. It’s irresponsible to sit back any longer and watch it disintegrate.”

Sullivan, meanwhile, said he applauds the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for recognizing the problem, but said repairs are not enough for the interchange.

“We still need a permanent solution in the form of rebuilding the entire interchange sooner rather than later,” he said in a statement. “We need a commitment from WisDOT, Gov. Doyle and neighboring communities, and we need it now.”
