On top of the four new stations planned for its high speed rail line, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation will renovate the Milwaukee Intermodal Station.
The department is looking for an engineer to finish the design and construction documents for a renovation to the Milwaukee station’s train shed, which is the building where passengers board the trains. The existing shed will be demolished and a new one will be built in its place, said John Oimoen, WisDOT project director for the high speed rail project.
The city of Milwaukee and WisDOT teamed up to renovate the station’s terminal in 2006 and 2007, but never rebuilt its boarding area to match the more modern design, Oimoen said. The new boarding area will match the renovated terminal building, he said, and include new amenities such as stairways over the tracks that let passengers pass between platforms.
“It’s a new facility,” he said, “a couple of key features will be it will be a much brighter facility,” he said. “We’re building the platform up to standards, the (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards.”
Architecture firm Hanno Weber & Associates and engineer Alfred Benesch & Co., both of Chicago, designed the new boarding area.
