The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s stated goal of helping the industry navigate prevailing wage reporting does little for a payroll administrator in Fennimore who still is waiting for help.
On Feb. 3, with the Feb. 7 reporting deadline approaching, Mandy Henkel of H & N Plumbing and Heating Inc. sent an e-mail request [...]

The state will not penalize contractors that fail to comply with the Department of Workforce Development’s new prevailing-wage reporting requirements, said Dane County Circuit Court Judge John Markson.
The suspension of enforcement will continue until April 19, when Markson is expected to grant or reject the Associated Builders & Contractors of Wisconsin Inc.’s request [...]

Backers of a bill requiring ironworkers to be licensed in Wisconsin say safety is at the core of their effort. But they lack evidence showing that the ironworkers or the public would be safer with state licensure.
Nationally, data show accidents among ironworkers declined during a recent five-year period despite more people working in [...]

Contractors disagree over what federal stimulus money will mean to the industry in 2010.
“Most contractors are feeling the pain right now,” said Bob Barker, executive vice president of the Associated General Contractors of Wisconsin Inc. “Some are doing better than others and have been able to take advantage of opportunities with renovating multifamily [...]

A bill that would increase the number of state Building Commission members is facing criticism that more representation further frays the group’s commitment to checking politics at the door.
“Historically, the Building Commission has stayed out of politics and partisanship — until this year when (Democrats) have steamrolled us on every single issue,” said [...]

Nonunion contractors working on prevailing-wage projects that continue into 2010 better be ready on Jan. 1 to start reporting their payrolls to the state.

Opponents of state contractor registration have little chance of killing the law this session, but that will not keep them from trying.
State Rep. Roger Roth, R-Appleton, said he will introduce a bill seeking the repeal of a law he said is unfair to builders in the state.
“The opposing party seems to want to go [...]

Contractors are risking the privacy of their personal information by bidding on stimulus projects.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act requires contractors report information about employees working on stimulus projects. The requirement could undermine a company’s ability to compete – by making sensitive information public - and it could open up personal information to telemarketers [...]

Builder groups are lashing out at a late addition to the state budget that would establish new rules for independent contractors and set stiff penalties for worker misclassification.
“If your intention is to talk about worker misclassification, then you shouldn’t just focus in on or target the construction industry,” said Brad Boycks, director of government [...]

A few tweaks to bidding documents for state projects could reduce confusion, but contractors are cautioning the state not to go too far with its changes.
“Whether you like the process or not, or whether you’ve made an error or not — which we all have — the system is very fair,” said David Voss, [...]
