Political resistance and timing could spoil the construction industry’s chance to speak out on a bill that would repeal the state’s new prevailing wage law.
“If we’re just looking at repealing all the work we did last year to get this into the budget, I don’t know that I’m going to hold a hearing,” [...]

A bill that would repeal every prevailing wage law change enacted in last year’s state budget faces long odds in the Democrat-controlled Legislature.
State Rep. Mary Williams, R-Medford, has drafted a bill that would reinstate a threshold of $234,000 as the point at which prevailing wages must be paid on public projects. The threshold [...]

Construction companies are disputing the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s claim it adequately prepared the industry for changes to the state’s prevailing wage law.
The changes require contractors file monthly reports on prevailing-wage payments on public works projects valued at $25,000 or more. DWD first made the 50-field reporting spreadsheet available in January, weeks [...]

The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s stated goal of helping the industry navigate prevailing wage reporting does little for a payroll administrator in Fennimore who still is waiting for help.
On Feb. 3, with the Feb. 7 reporting deadline approaching, Mandy Henkel of H & N Plumbing and Heating Inc. sent an e-mail request [...]

Complying with the state’s new prevailing-wage reporting law is coming at heavy costs to contractors throughout Wisconsin.
Under the state’s new prevailing-wage law, contractors are required to file monthly reports that detail prevailing-wage payments on any public works project valued at $25,000 or more. The spreadsheet the state Department of Workforce Development wants contractors [...]

The state has temporarily suspended its new prevailing-wage reporting law, according to the Associated Builders & Contractors of Wisconsin Inc., which has filed a request for an injunction to block enforcement of the law.
But officials with the state departments of Justice and Workforce Development would not confirm the reporting requirements have been suspended. [...]

Acting on industrywide confusion over the state’s new prevailing-wage requirements, the Associated Builders & Contractors of Wisconsin Inc. on Friday requested an injunction to block enforcement of the law.
“On the most basic level, it’s a bad law,” said John Mielke, ABC vice president.
ABC filed the request in Dane County Circuit Court and expects [...]

Backers of a bill requiring ironworkers to be licensed in Wisconsin say safety is at the core of their effort. But they lack evidence showing that the ironworkers or the public would be safer with state licensure.
Nationally, data show accidents among ironworkers declined during a recent five-year period despite more people working in [...]

Municipal engineers in southeast Wisconsin will not accept new runoff rules without an explanation of cost and effect for redevelopment projects.
“We just need to think about more of the possibilities and kind of narrow down more of the costs,” said Michael Lewis, West Allis director of public works and city engineer.
The proposed Milwaukee [...]

A bill that would increase the number of state Building Commission members is facing criticism that more representation further frays the group’s commitment to checking politics at the door.
“Historically, the Building Commission has stayed out of politics and partisanship — until this year when (Democrats) have steamrolled us on every single issue,” said [...]
