As the agency’s regional chief executive, Ann P. Kalayil heads operations providing federal agencies and the U.S. courts in six states with support in vital areas including real estate services, procurements, information technology, supplies, equipment, and vehicles. Headquartered in Chicago, the region has a workforce of almost 1,000 employees and an annual operating budget of about $450 million. Since GSA is the landlord for the civilian federal government, the Public Buildings Service (PBS) acquires space on behalf of the federal government through new construction and leasing, and acts as a caretaker for federal properties across the country. GSA owns or leases 9,624 assets, maintains an inventory of
more than 370.2 million square feet of workspace for 1.1 million federal employees, and preserves more than 481 historic properties.
