Republican legislative leaders at the state party convention are touting passage of a bill designed to make it easier to open an iron ore mine in northern Wisconsin and promising to cut taxes.
The state Senate’s top Republican said he’s against imposing a so-called tonnage tax on a company looking to open an iron mine in far northwestern Wisconsin.
The legislative session began Monday with Republican leaders promising swift passage of a mining bill and Democrats calling for more bipartisanship and the healing of old wounds stemming from the bruising fight over collective bargaining.
The nonpartisan board that oversees elections in Wisconsin too often favors Democrats and needs to be reconstituted, perhaps with a more partisan model like what previously existed, incoming Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Monday.
The semi-public agency charged with overseeing economic development efforts in Wisconsin did not track how much was owed on $8 million in overdue loans for more than a year, leading Gov. Scott Walker to promise dramatic corrective action.
At least one new mining bill in January seems a certainty for Wisconsin. But its content and fate probably will depend on which party wins in November.
