The state’s Joint Finance Committee on Wednesday rejected a motion to build a Milwaukee train shop, a move Democrats say clears the way for a lawsuit from a Spanish train manufacturer.
Wisconsin should brace itself for a lawsuit from Talgo Inc. if a state budget committee refuses to build a train maintenance building in Milwaukee, said state Rep. Robin Vos, co-chairman of the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will seek $2.5 million for the final design of a Milwaukee train maintenance building rather than using an Illinois station for the service.
The possibility the state could back off constructing a Milwaukee maintenance building for two Talgo Inc. trains surprised the president and CEO of the company.
Republicans on the state’s budget committee want to study whether a maintenance building for new trains bought in 2009 should be built in Milwaukee or whether they should be maintained out of state.
