State will get $1 million for wind

Wisconsin will receive more than $1 million from the federal government to further wind power development and research.

Through the federal money, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will net almost $400,000 for wind power engineering programs, while the UW System, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Lake Shore Technical College also will receive money for wind energy-related programs dealing with issues from development to coordination of resources.

“Microscopically, this is about building wind in Wisconsin,” said Giri Venkataramanan, associate professor in the UW-Madison’s College of Engineering. “Our reach is global, and the hope is people go through our schooling and can take those skills anywhere in the world — off shore, on shore, on lakes, wherever.”
