Madison needs money to back library plan (12:22 p.m. 5/18/09)

Madison leaders want the most expensive building option for the city’s Central Library, but must figure out how to pay for it.

The city’s Library Surplus Committee last week recommended Madison move forward with a $43.6 million Central Library as part of an estimated $75 million mixed-use plan by Madison-based The Fiore Cos. Inc.

The project was chosen instead of an estimated $40 million mixed-use proposal and a plan to renovate the existing library.

However, the city has only committed $1.7 million for the project as part of the 2009 budget. A report by the Madison Public Library Foundation last month said it could take five years to raise just $10 million.
