Bemis Co. Inc. will pay $120,000 to settle state claims that the company’s Oshkosh manufacturing facility violated air-pollution laws for four years.
The packaging manufacturer had 26 machines in Oshkosh that emitted volatile organics that are prohibited by state law. The Wisconsin Department of Justice claimed that from 2004 to 2008 Bemis did not keep accurate records of its emissions and did not inspect or repair the equipment.
Bemis reported the problems to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and has already started to correct the violations by changing internal practices and hiring a consultant to audit environmental performance.
A Winnebago County Circuit Court approved the settlement Thursday. Bemis must pay its penalty to the state by Aug. 21.
