Northern Wisconsin builders can find some relief in construction starting on the $32 million Swenson Hall project for the University of Wisconsin-Superior, but they want to know what’s next.
Although projects are available, an increased number of bidders from all over the state is making it difficult to win projects in the northern part of the state, said Bruce Johnson, president of South Range-based Northern Interstate Construction Inc.
Northern Interstate is performing excavation work on the Swenson Hall project, but it is only one of three projects the company was awarded this year. Although the company can survive in 2009, Johnson said he is unsure about 2010.
If the federal stimulus money does not spark reinvestment in development from the private sector as intended, the government will be unable to keep handing out money for projects in northern Wisconsin, said State Rep. Nick Milroy, D-Superior.
