Wisconsin’s new rule requiring asbestos-abatement contractors get a state license took effect Saturday.

New state rules approved last year require contractors, as opposed to workers and supervisors, get certified by the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services. The department reported Monday that 117 companies so far have received their certification.

The company certification costs $400 and must be renewed every two years.

Susan Lane, vice president of Asbestos Removal Services, Frederic, said it was easy to work through the DHFS certification process and her company had no problems.
