PSC predicts energy savings from efficiency projects (4:50 p.m. 8/5/09)

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin on Wednesday released a report predicting the state could save $900 million a year in energy costs if it spends more on efficiency projects.

The state would have to spend about $350 million a year on energy projects, such as building new renewable energy systems for houses. According to the report, the state also could save more money by requiring a building code change requiring more energy efficiency in new projects.

Electricity use in the state has grown roughly 1.2 percent per year since 2000 but could begin to decline by 1.6 percent a year starting in 2012 if new projects and code changes are put in place.
