Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle on Thursday announced the state has received $11.7 million in federal stimulus money through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant to help communities make energy efficiency improvements.

The Wisconsin Office of Energy Independence and the state Department of Commerce will collaborate to administer grant awards to municipalities with populations less than 35,000 and counties with populations less than 200,000. The grant awards can be used for retrofitting municipal buildings to make them more energy efficient and for installing interior and exterior energy-efficient lighting. The maximum award per applicant is $225,000.
