Stevens Point (AP) — The owner of The Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum in Stevens Point wants to donate the building, museum and art within it to the city.
Eighty-three-year-old David Smith said his children have their own professions and aren’t going to take it over from him. He wants it to stay open to help foster the arts scene in the downtown area, which includes several other arts-related businesses.
So far, two Common Council committees have approved the gift. The full council votes on it Oct. 19.
Smith said the donation also would keep his decorative, nonobjective style of art he teaches and displays — what he calls the Scarabocchio style — in the public’s eye.
