Building Commission approves bike trail spending

The State Building Commission on Wednesday approved spending to complete the final section of the Badger Trail in Dane County.

The money will help link Fitchburg and Madison’s Southwest and Capital City trails to the Badger Trail, which runs from Fitchburg to the Illinois border.

State Rep. Spencer Black, D-Madison, issued a press release Wednesday celebrating the commission’s decision.

“Today’s approval is very important for both bike commuters and recreational cyclists,” he said in the statement. “It is estimated that a quarter of a million people a year will use the new trail.”

The Legislature first voted to approve the complete trail in 1997.

The Building Commission’s approval Wednesday of $497,000 in spending supplements more than $1 million in federal money for the project.
