We Energies fined $35,000 after worker death (10:21 p.m. 12/8/09)

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee-based We Energies faces fines of $35,000 for violations found during an investigation into this summer’s death of a utility employee burned when steam escaped from a pipe.

The worker, William Kaiserling, suffered second- and third-degree burns to 60 percent of his body while he was releasing water from the power system during a June storm. He died several weeks later.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited We Energies last month for seven serious violations of occupational health and safety laws.

Labor Department spokesman Brad Mitchell said the violations involved safety issues in confined spaces.

Utility spokesman Brian Manthey said We Energies will contest the violations.
