4,000 get notified about unemployment benefits (9:14 a.m. 12/15/09)

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The state of Wisconsin has sent letters to about 4,000 people whose unemployment benefits have run out, reminding them to apply for extended benefits approved by President Barack Obama in early November.

About 9,000 Wisconsin residents have already applied for the benefits and should be getting their checks by the end of the week.

Department of Workforce Development Spokesman Dick Jones said there are another roughly 2,000 people whose benefits either just expired or who are about to run out of unemployment benefits who also may be eligible for the extension.

A state computer programming delay resulted in thousands of people having to wait for the benefits even though they were approved by the federal government about six weeks ago.
