Joint Committee on Audit to tackle WisDOT’s use of private consultants

The Joint Committee on Audit on Wednesday will hear testimony from invited speakers on the use of private consultants on Wisconsin Department of Transportation projects.

The subject of the hearing will be a May 2009 report which examined the state’s increasing use of private consultants. The subject became a hot topic last year after it was found that some projects using private consultants could have been done for less by using state employees.

State Sen. Julie Lassa, D-Stevens Point, earlier this year proposed a bill that, among other things, would require state agencies only choose a consultant over in-house staff if an analysis shows the agency would save money as a result.
