Madison’s Urban Design Commission Thursday morning, on a 5-4 vote, granted initial approval to the estimated $93 million redevelopment of the Edgewater Hotel.
“This was probably the first positive for (developer Hammes Co.),” said Bruce Woods, commission chairman. “But it wasn’t a resounding positive.”
Woods had the tie-breaking vote, and said he cast it because he was “comfortable enough” with the designs Brookfield-based Hammes submitted and wanted other city commissions to review the project.
The Madison Plan Commission is expected to review the project Monday. A Common Council vote on the project is tentatively scheduled for April 20.
However, even if the project gets approval from all other city committees, Hammes will have to return to the Urban Design Commission for final approval before beginning construction.
“There are lots of details they still have to bring forward,” Woods said. “All the drawings we’ve seen are from a perspective of someone standing far away and looking at the building. We still don’t know what the front doors will look like, or what the Brigadoon Room will look like. We want to see that.”
