Madison Police Department arrests copper thieves (UPDATE)

By Paul Snyder

The Madison Police Department announced Thursday it arrested three men connected to at least one construction site theft in the city.

According to Lt. Dave McCaw, Tyler Watson, 27, was arrested on the charge of a probation violation.  Tyler Pollock, 19, was arrested for possession of burglary tools and a parole violation. Travis Pollock, 19, was arrested for being party to a crime, entering a locked construction site and possession of burglary tools. None of the men have a permanent address.

The three men were apprehended Wednesday after police found a hotel key card on a construction site in the 6000 block of Manufacturers Drive, McCaw said.

The key led police to the Select Inn on Madison’s east side, where they discovered copper in a car and the suspects’ hotel room.

McCaw said the police have linked some of the copper to extension cord stolen from a Krupp General Contractors LLC on East Johnson Street.

“They probably did other locations,” McCaw said. “We’re flooding detectives with all the burglary reports to construction sites to see if we can connect the copper to other sites.”

However, the arrests might not close the book on the rash of thefts this month in the city. McCaw said the three men do not resemble suspects security cameras caught robbing another Krupp site last week.

Betsy Freiburger, a Krupp project manager and safety coordinator, said she was encouraged the police made some arrests, but the company is still on alert.

The Sequoya site, she said, has been burglarized seven times since December.

“(The police) are indicating to me that there are multiple groups out there,” she said.
