Northbound Zoo Interchange bridge reopens

By Sean Ryan

The state opened the first of three replacement bridges on the Zoo Interchange Friday morning, ending detours around the northbound Highway 45 bridge that closed on March 29.

The reopening comes after the Wisconsin Department of Transportation on Wednesday announced Milwaukee Constructors LLC would finish the replacement bridge within a week of the Highway 45 span closing. The joint venture of contractors is building three new bridges on the Zoo Interchange to replace three cracking spans on the interchange.

Under a $15.3-million contract with WisDOT, Milwaukee Constructors has until May 24 to complete the other two bridges and until June 14 to demolish the three existing zoo interchange bridges.
