PSC approves Sheboygan plant upgrade

The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin on Tuesday granted Alliant Energy initial approval for an estimated $150 million upgrade at its Edgewater power plant in Sheboygan.

Alliant still needs a written order from the PSC to proceed with the project, which will add pollution controls to reduce emissions from the coal-fired plant. Alliant needs to make the upgrades to comply with the state’s Reasonable Available Control Technology requirements, which are designed to limit nitrogen oxide emissions in seven counties, including Sheboygan.

In a press release issued Tuesday, Barbara Swan, president of Alliant subsidiary Wisconsin Power & Light Co., called the project a way to produce environmentally responsible electricity.

The utility expects the emissions controls to be operational in 2012.
