Packers spending for possible Lambeau expansion

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have spent more than $27 million to shore up property near Lambeau Field for a possible sports and entertainment district.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reports that it reviewed land records and has calculated the Packers spent the $27 million over the last five years, acquiring more than 28 acres.

Team officials say the land purchases are the first step to developments that would create franchise revenue that wouldn’t have to be shared with other NFL teams.

Other franchises have had similar strategies. The New England Patriots’ 700-acre Patriot Place next to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., is the most successful so far.

The Packers haven’t said much about what they’ll do with the property. Possibilities include retail, hotels, restaurants, youth sports and health care facilities.
