Oconomowoc officials say they are stunned at the state’s decision to remove the city from consideration for a station on the Milwaukee-to-Madison high speed train line.

Bob Duffy, the city’s economic development director said the Common Council was scheduled to discuss the proposal in a closed door meeting Tuesday night but instead were presented with the state’s decision. Duffy denied the mayor or other city officials asked to be removed from consideration.

Initially, Oconomowoc expressed interest in a rail station. But that apparently changed during an Aug. 2 community workshop, according to a letter sent by Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi to Mayor James Daley.

“Due to the lack of interest by the city, we are discontinuing further discussions on a proposed station in Oconomowoc,” according to the letter.

  1. WOW! As a resident of oconomowoc i have to say Mayor Daley dropped the bomb on this one. HORRIBLE decision. All the commuters and shoppers on the train will now roll through Oconomowoc with no chance of spending any money in the downtown area. HUGE UNFORTUNATE MISTAKE!

  2. WOW!….You think that passengers on this train, on their way to or from Madison, would’ve gotten off in your town, roamed around downtown to go shopping?! Really?
All, (and that’s not going to be very many), those commuters, ( there won’t be any ‘shoppers’) riding this car-speed rail, just want to get to their destination. The furthest thing from their mind is to stop off for a bit of shopping, unless you consider buying a cup of coffee in the train station..’shopping’, then I guess you’re right, there will be shopping.

  3. I support the state administration on this decision. Oconomowoc snoozed, and it lost. and the world doesn’t have forever for communities that can’t make up their minds.Let the trains roar through Oconomowoc at speed as the populace watches and wonders why progress has passed them by.

  4. I doubt any doing a daily commute will have time to stop, they are already loosing time taking the train versus driving. At $60.00 bucks a ticket it would cost a family of four $240.00 not including transportation to and from the stations. Why would you not drive your family for this price? and if any do stop they will be too broke to afford shopping.
