Milwaukee Common Council approves $1 home sales for flood victims

Listen to this articleThe Milwaukee Common Council on Wednesday approved a proposal to sell city-owned houses for $1 to owners who lost their homes in the July 22 floods.
Between 18 and 24 homeowners could qualify to buy the homes that the city acquired for back taxes. Those who buy the houses will be responsible for bringing the houses into code compliance and must live in the houses for at least five years. Some of the houses have extensive code violations.
Renters displaced by the flood are not eligible for the program.
The motion passed 14-0. Alderman Robert Donovan was excused.
