Bids are out for preparation work for the Hoan Bridge redecking in Milwaukee.

State Highway Project-Hoan Bridge Deck Repair

Work for this portion of the 1977-built bridge includes preparing the deck, concrete masonry deck patching, traffic control and pavement marking.

Lunda Construction Co., Black River Falls, submitted the lowest bid at $214,052.48. Edward Kraemer & Sons Inc., Plain, bid $240,768.73 for the prep work, while Zenith Tech Inc., Waukesha, bid $272,402.48. Vista Design & Construction LLC’s bid of $282,817.05 was the highest among the four submitted bids.

Work on the redecking portion of the bridge is scheduled to begin in October, according to WisDOT.

The deck repairs are expected to be completed in 2011 at a cost of $12 million to $17 million, according to the plan outlined by WisDOT.

Small pieces of concrete began falling from the Hoan Bridge in June, according to a WisDOT official. The deterioration prompted a plan to hang netting over Jones Island. Kraemer & Sons Inc. in July won that contract. That work is ongoing.

The new net will stretch from the southern end of the Jones Island treatment plant to the Milwaukee harbor inlet north of the plant, Paul Trombino, WisDOT division operations director, said.

The Hoan carries about 43,000 vehicles per day.
