Minn. town of Oronoco loses bridge to flood

ORONOCO, Minn. (AP) — The town of Oronoco, 30 miles from the border with Wisconsin, is coping with the loss the main bridge leading into the southeastern Minnesota community.

KARE-TV reports The Minnesota Avenue/County Road 18 bridge is now impassable, after the swollen Zumbro River carved its way around the Lake Shady dam and washed away the northern approach from the span. Witnesses say the approach started falling away around noon Friday.

Oronoco is just north of Rochester, in Olmsted County. Until the bridge is repaired or replaced, residents will have to drive five miles out of their way.

Olmsted County Sheriff’s Captain Kevin Torgerson, who heads the county’s emergency management office, said at least 50 homeowners in Oronoco have reported flood damage.

According to KMSP-TV, water in some homes rose several feet.

Emergency management officials have been concerned about a dam in Oronoco giving way as well but it appears to be holding.
