Grand Chute roundabout often battered by drivers

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (AP) — Officials in the city of Grand Chute can’t figure out why drivers keep driving over and damaging a traffic roundabout.

The Post-Crescent in Appleton reports that, in the latest incident, someone crashed over the roundabout at the intersection of two county roads and ran over an evergreen tree, smashed a decorative rock and broke a water source. That caused about $1,500 in damage, and was the sixth such reported crash since November 2008.

Grand Chute administrator Tom March said he thinks drivers have either been impaired, asleep or just not paying attention to the signs. He said the roundabout is well-marked and very wide, but he’s thinking about adding rumble strips to give spaced-out drivers even more warning.
