NASA is gearing up for a mission to compile the most accurate climate data ever, in hopes of improving the accuracy of computer models used to predict climate change.
Called CLARREO (Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory), the mission will provide accurate, credible, and tested climate records that lay the groundwork for decisions on policies that address the effects of climate change on society. Langley is partnering on the mission with other organizations, including universities, industry and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
CLARREO is expected to launch between 2017 and 2020.
The CLARREO mission will monitor the pulse of the Earth to better understand climate change. CLARREO is a climate-focused mission that will become a key element of the climate observing system. The foundation for CLARREO is the ability to produce highly accurate and irrefutable climate records. Measurements derived from CLARREO will be used to detect climate trends and to test, validate, and improve climate prediction models. The CLARREO mission will provide accurate, credible, and tested climate records that lay the groundwork for informed decisions on mitigation and adaptation policies that address the effects of climate change on society.
CLARREO is one of NASA’s new earth science missions and have been developed to obtain information across the infrared spectra, which is where the Earth emits its energy out to space, everything from clouds, to the surface, to water vapor, and carbon dioxide and in the reflected solar, which is where we reflect sunlight back to space. The combination of the two is really what drives the Earth’s climate system.
