Wis. landfill oil filter ban to start soon

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Do-it-yourself mechanics won’t be allowed to dump oil filters in Wisconsin landfills starting next month.

A new state law banning car engine oil filters or any other oil absorbent materials in landfills will go in to effect in January. That includes granular absorbents, rags and paper towels. Violators will face fines ranging from $50 to $2,000.

The state Department of Natural Resources estimates Wisconsin residents throw away an estimated 187,000 gallons of oil in used filters and 1.6 million gallons of oil in absorbents.

The DNR has posted information on how to recycle oil on the agency’s website.
