Two workers suffered minor injuries Thursday when a pipe exploded during reconstruction work in the pool house at Hoyt Park in Wauwatosa.
Wauwatosa Deputy Fire Chief Jim Case said the workers were cutting a pipe in the mechanical room of the pool house when an explosion occurred at about 2:30 p.m. One worker suffered facial lacerations and another had an internal laceration. Both were taken to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
The general contractor, C.G. Schmidt Inc., Milwaukee, and OSHA are investigating the accident, Case said. The cause of the blast was listed as undetermined.
Milwaukee County closed the pool in 2003, citing the lack of money to do necessary repairs. The repairs were characterized as extensive.
Friends of the Hoyt Park Pool, a private group, entered into a 55-year lease with the county. The county agreed to contribute $1.5 million to the $9.2 million pool restoration. The group has raised $7.7 million.
The pool is scheduled to reopen during the Memorial Day weekend.
