Wis. Assembly committee passes wetland exemption

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Republican-controlled Assembly committee has approved a bill that would allow a car dealer to avoid a permit to build on a wetland near Lambeau Field.

Car dealer John Bergstrom wants to build a retail development on about an acre-and-a-half of wetlands between U.S. Highway 41 and the stadium. State environmental officials have approved a permit for the project, but the Wisconsin Wetlands Association has challenged the process. The Republican bill would circumvent that challenge by exempting Bergstrom from a permit.

According to the association, the bill is designed to trump its challenge and Democrats say the measure is a special favor for one influential individual.

Republicans counter they’re trying to create jobs.

The Assembly Natural Resources Committee voted 9-6 to send the bill on to the full chamber.
