Senators praise Paul Jadin as Commerce secretary pick

Gov. Scott Walker’s choice to lead the state Department of Commerce drew bipartisan praise from the Senate on Thursday.

The Senate unanimously confirmed former Green Bay mayor Paul Jadin as Commerce secretary. Jadin also worked more than six years as president and CEO of the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce.

While some of Walker’s cabinet secretaries have been controversial selections, senators agreed Jadin was the right person to lead the state’s effort to create new business.

“I can’t think of anyone more competent to do this,” Sen. Robert Cowles, R-Green Bay, said. “He knows the programs in and out, he’s intellectually honest and I think he’s strong enough to tell the governor when the governor might be on the wrong track.”

Sen. Tim Carpenter, D-Milwaukee, agreed Jadin is a strong selection, but added he hopes Jadin doesn’t think Wisconsin is in need of a total overhaul.

“One of the points I made with Paul is to recognize the good that’s going on in the state, and let’s build on it,” Carpenter said.

Jadin, Cowles said, is “one of the best appointments in this administration, and I know he’ll do a good job.”
