MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Wisconsin state Senate has passed a bill designed to help lure Bass Pro Shop to a site near Lambeau Field.
The bill passed 20-11 Wednesday and backed by Gov. Scott Walker would exempt filling a wetland from the normal permitting process. A spokesman for Bass said last week that the company would not build on a wetland and had not committed to the project.
Environmentalists fought allowing the wetland to be filled, arguing that the developer, car dealer John Bergstrom, was getting special treatment.
Supporters note that the Department of Natural Resources has previously approved a permit for the project but an appeal by an environmental group led to the delay. They say there is a reasonable plan to deal with the wetlands and the development would create jobs.
