Surveys will soon be distributed to Hartland residents seeking opinions about a need for a new community center.

The idea had been shuffled around since recreation director Sasha Snapp took over operations in 2007.

The existing community center is located in the lower level of the municipal building at 210 Cottonwood Ave. The 6,000-square-foot space was previously used as a library, but only 2,000 square feet is available for use for recreational programs. In addition, support pillars break up the room, stymieing efforts to provide continuous open space.

In recent months, residents have called for an area to conduct teen programs, offer aerobics and preschool classes, and provide room for a senior center.

The village will hold several informational meetings about the idea starting this month. A site for a new center has not been identified, and there are no immediate construction plans.
