Owners of historic homes can save on taxes

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — If your home is on Wisconsin’s official list of historic houses, you could get a tax credit for fixing it up.

The credit is a 25 percent income-tax credit. To be eligible you have to own and live in a historic house.

You also have to apply for and receive approval from the Wisconsin Historical Society before beginning the work. You’d also have to spend at least $10,000 on the project within a two-year period.

Eligible work includes painting the exterior, repairing windows and replacing the furnace or roof.

The National Register of Historic Places lists more than 16,000 houses in Wisconsin.
