Glass worker dies in Portage plant accident

PORTAGE, Wis. (AP) — Portage police say a worker at a glass plant has died after apparently being knocked over by a large sheet of glass.

A Portage Daily Register report says the employee worked at Cardinal Glass Industries in Portage. His name has not been released.

Police Sgt. Keith Klafke said the worker had taken large pieces of glass outside the building Sunday for recycling. The sheets measure about 8 feet by 8 feet.

Klafke said there were no witnesses, but a preliminary investigation suggests that part of the glass came loose and knocked him back.

Plant manager Ernie Curley said when the man didn’t return to the building, another worker went to look for him. Police were called about 3 a.m.

Curley said everyone at the company is going through a period of shock.
