MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) — Striking workers at Manitowoc Co. have voted against the company’s latest contract offer.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 516 announced the results of the vote Friday. The Manitowoc Herald Times reports the vote was 140-37.
About 200 machinists have been on strike since Nov. 15. Contract talks between Manitowoc Cranes and the union resumed this week and a tentative agreement was reached.
In a statement to WLUK-TV, Manitowoc Cranes said it is disappointed the union membership rejected that tentative agreement. It included modified language of a proposal to make union membership optional.
But some of the rank-and-file say the language threatens the union’s future existence.
The company also is asking that workers return to their jobs, and said it will meet with a mediator if asked.
