I-35W bridge engineer to lead Stillwater project

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – Minnesota transportation officials say the engineer who led the Interstate 35W bridge project five years ago will manage the new St. Croix bridge project.

John Chiglo led the project that replaced the interstate bridge that collapsed over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis in 2007.

Construction of the new four-lane bridge that will connect Oak Park Heights, Minn., and St. Joseph, Wis., is expected to begin in 2014 and take about three years to complete. It’s estimated to cost between $571 million and $676 million.

The project also will convert the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge to a bicycle-pedestrian bridge, and protect sensitive resources along the federally protected St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports the bill authorizing the project is still awaiting President Barack Obama’s signature.
