OSHA cites excavation firm, advises $60K fine

UNION GROVE, Wis. (AP) – A federal agency is proposing fines for a Wisconsin excavation firm that allegedly failed to provide proper safety precautions for its workers.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration filed two violations this week against Willkomm Excavating & Grading Inc. The violations carry proposed penalties of $60,500.

According to OSHA, it received a complaint after Willkomm workers worked on water lines in Greenfield in a trench more than 6 feet deep. OSHA standards mandate that all excavations 5 feet or deeper be conducted with proper precautions to protect against a collapse, and the agency says Willkomm failed to do so.

A spokeswoman for the Union Grove company says Willkomm has no immediate comment.

According to OSHA, Willkomm was also cited for trench-related violations in 2005 and 2009.
